All Music Guide Review by Steve Huey:
Perhaps the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk, Wire's Pink Flag plays like the Ramones-Go-to-Art-School -- song after song careens past in a glorious, stripped-down rush. However, where the Ramones commanded attention through their sense of humor and appropriation of simple, trashy '60s pop/rock hooks, Wire ultimately made their mark through unpredictability. Very few of the songs followed traditional verse/chorus structures -- if one or two riffs sufficed, no more were added; if a musical hook or lyric didn't need to be repeated, Wire immediately stopped playing (accounting for the album's brevity: 21 songs in under 36 minutes on the original version). Many punk bands aimed to strip rock & roll of its excess, but Wire took the concept a step further, cutting punk itself down to its essence, making for an even more concentrated impact. Upon first listen, some of the tracks may seem like underdeveloped sketches or fragments, but further listening reveals that in most cases, the music is memorable even without the repetition and structure most ears have come to expect -- it simply takes a bit more concentrated attention for the songs to reveal themselves. And Wire is full of ideas; for such a fiercely minimalist band, they display quite a musical range, spanning slow, haunting textural exercises, warped power pop, punk anthems, and proto-hardcore rants -- it's recognizable, yet simultaneously quite unlike anything that preceded it. Pink Flag's enduring influence pops up in hardcore, post-punk, alternative rock, and even Brit-pop, and it still remains a fresh, invigorating listen today: A fascinating, highly inventive rethinking of punk rock and the freedom allowed by doing it yourself. [The 2018 reissue of Pink Flag is strangely comprehensive for an album that's so stripped down and to the point. The songs have all been remastered, the set comes with an 80-page hardcover book that features many unseen images taken by the group's photographer at the time, Annette Green, and there is a second disc of extra tracks too. Most of them are demos for songs from the album; three separate demo sessions provide 13 lo-fi versions of songs they slightly polished and honed for the album. There are also alternate versions of "Three Girl Rhumba," "It's Only Obvious," and "Ex Lion Tamer," as well as mono mixes of "12XU" and "Mannequin." It's fascinating to hear the alternate versions and demos, not because they are so different from the finished versions, but because they are so similar. Wire knew exactly what they wanted to do from the very beginning and stuck to it throughout the process of recording their first classic album.]
